On a recent Thursday evening, a crowd gathered in a space in Greenwich Village to view the latest fashions coming down a runway. The event wasn’t at a designer store or a rented venue but at YAI Network’s Manhattan Recreation Services. Participants from the Girlz Only Club, which meets weekly, planned the event with staff members and volunteers from the Brighter Futures Society. The diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder currently encompasses the diagnoses of autism, Asperger’s syndrome and pervasive developmental disability-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). But this may not always be the case. Many people in the autism community are currently discussing the proposed removal of the diagnosis of Asperger’s, as well as PDD-NOS, from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-V to be published in 2012.
