Your advocacy efforts were a success - October 18th is now "Disability History Day" in New York State!

On July 21, 2010 Governor Paterson signed S-7931/A-10853 designating October 18th as Disability History Day in New York State.  This is a huge step in promoting awareness of disability history and acknowledging the significant contributions of individuals with disabilities in our society.  Your participation and continued efforts led to the passage of this bill, which created a day that will forever commemorate the contributions of people with disabilities to New York's history.

Please take a moment to thank Governor Paterson for his support of this initiative (call 518-474-8390 or email) and above all, celebrate Disability History Day on October 18th. If you need ideas on how to celebrate, log onto the www.disabilityhistoryweek.org or the www.museumofdisability.org websites to get some ideas.

Tax deductions for charitable contributions under attack in Albany

The Governor and Legislature are currently weighing a decision that will lower tax deductions from 50% to 25% for some charitable contributors.  Not-for-profit organizations like the members of the YAI Network have already suffered from significant budget cuts, and the current economic environment has made it even more difficult to raise funds through charitable contributions. This proposal will only make it more challenging to raise these much needed funds, which support the important services YAI Network provides.

Call or email your Senator, Assembly representative, Conference Leader Sampson and Speaker Silver. Urge them to oppose this reduction.
