Aging
As a result of improved services, people with developmental disabilities are now living longer than ever before. In fact, we estimate that in 2010, 65 percent of the adults served by the YAI Network will be 50 years of age and older. This is an exciting advance, but it raises new challenges, as people with developmental disabilities are more likely than the general population to develop Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and other age-related problems. They also develop these conditions at earlier ages.
It is therefore critical that our specialized geriatric medical services, care coordination and planning for the aging population be expanded and new programs be developed. These services are intensive, costly and not fully supported by government funds. The YAI Network must seek private support to continue its vital work of ensuring that older people with disabilities can lead independent and dignified lives.
Based on more than 50 years of providing expert, caring services to people with developmental and learning disabilities, the YAI Network is uniquely qualified to launch its highly innovative Aging Initiatives. These will include a full range of "cutting edge" services and technology, expanded existing services, specialized environments and renovated current facilities. The Network's Aging Initiatives will befit a national model of services and programs designed to keep aging adults with disabilities in home-like settings in the community. We will offer the finest in:
