Running, Walking and Supporting People with Disabilities in Puerto Rico
YAI’s La Carrera del la Esperanza (Run for Hope), is an exciting event for people of all abilities. The day includes a 5K run/walk, children’s races, entertainment and more! This event benefits the International Institute for People with Disabilities of Puerto Rico (IIPD/PR), a member of the YAI Network.
The race route runs along the tree-lined Avenida de Las Nereidas, where participants are cheered along by family, friends and YAI supporters. Runners include IIPD/PR staff members, volunteers and service recipients.
Thanks to the generous support of top sponsor Pfizer and so many other corporations and caring members of the community, our 2011 event has raised $23,500. These funds will support IIPD/PR programs that provide employment training, placement, and coaching, as well as social and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities like Edwin, who proudly ran in the 2010 and 2011 events. Read his inspiring story!
IIPD/PR is closely affiliated with another YAI Network agency, The Corporate Source (TCS). TCS provides a variety of services designed to help people with disabilities find jobs and succeed in the workplace. "This is a day that makes all of us proud," said Joe Garcia, Director of Operations for the YAI Network in Puerto Rico. "You realize that it's all about celebrating the achievements of the people we help every day – whether it's helping them train for jobs, provide opportunities for friendships and inclusion or helping them become more independent."
