Weekly Activities

Recreation programs are available to individuals 18 and older with developmental disabilities. For eligibility status, please contact us.

Tuesdays

5 - 6 p.m.

  • Photography - Learn techniques and apply them as you photograph people, places and things. Participants critique one another's work.
  • Work it out - Join group discussion on work ethics, conflict resolution and your rights and responsibilities.

6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

  • Karate - Learn the skills and discipline to succeed in the martial arts.
  • Relaxation - Learn breathing techniques to calm the mind, meditation to relax the body and other strategies to release stress.
  • The Art of the Gentlemen - Etiquette, personal hygiene and self-esteem are just some of the traits of outstanding gentlemen. Discuss what it takes to be a gentleman.

7:30 - 8:30 pm

  • Tailor Made - Learn how to sew by hand and using a sewing machine to make pillows, stuffed animals and much more.
  • What’s the Forecast - Learn about the weather and its impact on the world.
  • Social Disasters on the World Stage - Broad social issues, such as health care, global warming, the economy, war, hunger and AIDS, which will negatively affect all of us.

Wednesdays

5 - 6 p.m.

  • Fitness @ Five - Enjoy exercising to music with low-impact aerobics.
  • Video Game League - An introduction to the exciting world of video game competition.

6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

  • Famous and Outstanding People - Participants will learn about the people who have influenced and shaped their lives.
  • A Project a Day - Create a different work of art using ceramics, paints and fabrics.
  • Sports - Play basketball, soccer, volleyball or jog a few laps around the track at the McBurney YMCA.
  • Social/Sexual Relationships - Explore human sexuality and learn about the diversity of relationships in today’s world.

7:30 - 8:30 p.m.

  • Creative Approaches to Art - Express your creativity through painting, music, and other arts.
  • Advanced Art - Individuals with strong art skills will work on a creative project.
  • History of New York City - Learn about the most interesting and historical highlights of New York City.

Thursdays

5  - 6 p.m.

  • Peer Support - Group members support each other in solving their personal problems.
  • Poetry - Participants explore their inner thoughts and feelings which they might not have considered before.
  • Photography - See Tuesday description.

6:30 - 7:30pm

  • Karate - Same as Tuesday description.
  • Improv Group - Through role playing, learn to be more assertive, listen carefully, and recognize your feelings.
  • Music Extravaganza - Enjoy the music group and a variety of musical experiences, including TV and movie themes, songs from different places and musical and Broadway show tunes.
  • Girls Only Club - Explore topics important to women including, fashion, beauty, love, relationships, women’s health, proper etiquette, and much more.

7:30 - 8:30 p.m.

  • Animal Planet - Explore the most fascinating creatures on earth, their habits, where they live and more.
  • Crafting Made Easy - With the guidance of a talented artist, participates will create crafts which could easily be sold in retail stores.

Fridays

4:30 - 8 p.m.

  • Friday Night at the Movies - Group members only go to first-run movies. After the show enjoy dinner and a critique of the film.

Saturdays

10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

  • Day in the Community - Groups take advantage of all the wonderful activities and sites of New York City. Enjoy trips to parks, museums, plays, concerts or play pool or bowl a few games. Members also explore the numerous ethnic cultures and cuisine that make the city great.
