The Legal Aid Society launched its toll-free Access to Benefits (A2B) Hotline in the summer of 2012. The Access to Benefits Hotline is a “one-stop” resource for New Yorkers in need of legal assistance to obtain government benefits. With the help of individual private law firms and volunteers we are able to provide direct assistance and/or referrals in matters related to unemployment insurance, public health insurance, including Medicaid, public assistance, and food stamps. Since Hurricane Sandy, our hotline has also been dedicated to assisting callers in need of disaster relief. Our hotline is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. During those times, volunteers answer the hotline, identify questions, and legal issues, record basic information about each caller’s issues, and provide advice when appropriate. Legal Aid Society advocates follow up with callers who require further assistance or representation.
