It’s another milestone for Fred!

Many supporters and friends of the YAI Network are already familiar with Fredrick and his emotional and inspiring story.  And now, thanks to New York City Comptroller John C. Liu, even more people are getting to know him.

The Office of the Comptroller recently held a celebration to honor the achievements of people with disabilities and others who have positively impacted the community.  Each of the four honorees was presented a Commendation in recognition of their accomplishments. Even in such select company, Fredrick stood out for his contributions to the community.

“Fredrick is an example of advocacy, of perseverance and of success,” said Comptroller Liu. “This award is a celebration of his achievements.”

Fredrick is a resident of YAI Network’s Manhattan Supportive Living Program.  Since 2007, he has, with support from YAI, been employed as a messenger for a midtown law firm. In addition to his full-time work responsibilities, Fred is taking classes to prepare for the Graduate Equivalency Degree exam.

Not satisfied with self-improvement alone, Fredrick makes volunteering and social engagement a top priority. Fredrick regularly lends a hand at a soup kitchen near his home and delivers meals to the elderly.  In 2009, he was fortunate to attend the presidential inauguration in Washington, DC, where he was inspired by President Obama’s call to action. Fredrick returned to New York City with a renewed commitment to helping others reach their own goals.

“I am so proud of him,” beamed Fredrick's mother, Dorothy, at the Comptroller's ceremony. “This award is a big deal for him as an advocate and as a leader in the community. And it’s a big deal for me as a mother. My son is making a difference. He is not invisible.”

Comptroller Liu grinned as he shook Fredrick’s hand and presented him with the Commendation, saying, “As you have been inspired by your mom, by YAI and by President Obama, it is safe to say that everyone in this room is inspired by you.”

After accepting the award, Fredrick addressed the crowd with appreciation. “I am totally blown away by this honor. I want to thank YAI for helping me get where I am today and for letting me be a representative of YAI in the community.”

Fredrick also imparted his personal philosophy. “I’m doing my part to show that disabilities don’t get in the way of achieving goals and teaching others to take initiative to do the same.”

Comptroller Liu also used the event, hosted graciously by Lighthouse International, as an opportunity to articulate the Office of the Comptroller’s commitment to people with disabilities.  He highlighted that his office is currently working with the City’s transportation agencies to implement an improved para-transit system for all New Yorkers.

“Instead of disabled, I use the term ‘differently-abled,” spoke Comptroller Liu. “‘Differently-abled’ recognizes that all New Yorkers are different and focuses on what people can do rather than what they cannot.”

Fredrick personifies this ideal. He does not worry about limitations, but pursues his personal goals while encouraging others to do the same.

“This award is better than winning the lottery,” Fredrick told Comptroller Liu. “It’s respect. It’s acknowledgement. And it’s encouragement.”
