For many years, Donna and Devaughn longed to have jobs that would provide them with a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Thanks to training and support from YAI/NIPD’s Manhattan Employment Services and New York State’s Options for People Through Services (OPTS), today they are both happily employed at Yonkers Raceway in Westchester County.

Yonkers Raceway has hired nine individuals from YAI/NIPD’s employment programs.

“I love my job,” says Donna, who works two days a week in the employee dining room. “It makes me feel happy to work.”

‘People Treat Me Well’

Devaughn, who works three days a week in the food court, enjoys his job as a porter. “People treat me well,” he said. “They say I’m a hard worker and it’s true.”Michael Kramer, Director of YAI/NIPD’s Employment Initiatives, said OPTS has opened the door to employment for many individuals who otherwise may not have had an opportunity to enter the workforce.

OPTS Providing Extra Support

“OPTS is a wonderful support system for consumers who need that extra attention,” he said. “It gives our consumers a chance for greater support and confidence building.”
