"I've never seen the individuals feel so good about themselves," — Erika Dauro, YAI Staff Trainer in Day/Employment Services.

With an infusion of some new staff at YAI's Elmsford Day/Employment, and creativity, Friday's Valentine's Ball exceeded everyone's expectations. With simple instructions to “dress to impress,” staff rallied using Central Park Challenge funds and donated food and their passion.

Susan Bilek and William Hess (photo) have been good friends for years, sharing time at volunteer sites and the Westchester After Hours Recreation Program. "They sparkled," said Atena Badis, DSP, following the celebration. "They're always there for each other."

Classrooms were transformed into a dance area, complete with red carpet, a studio for photographs with jackets, corsages and bling, a beauty room with staff polishing nails and applying makeup, an art studio for decorating pre-cut heart shaped Valentine’s Day cards, and, of course, a dessert buffet.

Proud parents photographed their children before heading to Elmsford. Tears of joy flowed, as staff saw how special the celebration made everyone feel.

"Confidence comes from within," said Nicole Dennis, DSP, "but there is no greater feeling than watching an individual recognize and accept how great they are."
