YAI's Direct Support Professionals are working around the clock to provide comfort and care for over 800 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) living in YAI residences. On September 14, Kizzy Byfield completed YAI’s CPR and First Aid training. Just 13 days later, on September 27, she used those skills to save the life of a man who attends the agency’s Fulton Street Day Habilitation program in Farmingdale, New York.

Every year throughout September and October each region in the YAI Network hosts events that celebrate the hard work and dedication of the agency’s 2,225 Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). In addition to offering a day of food, music, and cutting loose with colleagues, these events also provide an opportunity for supervisors and peers to recognize outstanding DSPs for their service.

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the New York State budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year on March 31. A mixed bag for the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities, the budget contains items which directly affect the lives of people with disabilities and direct support staff.

Justine Ortiz has been a dedicated employee at YAI for five years. During this time, she has shown tremendous growth, professionally and personally. She started her employment as a DSP in a Day Hab program in Manhattan.
