An Introduction to Working With Children and Adults on the Autism Spectrum

This course qualifies for 6 CTLE contact hours through YAI’s partnership with Manhattan Star Academy. 

This is an introductory course that will give attendees insight into working with school-age children and adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This training course will highlight general characteristics of ASD along the developmental life span. It will explore strategies and tips for working with children in the classroom, partnering with parents, transitioning from adolescence, and supporting adults in the workplace. Practical visual supports will be shared which can be used in various settings. It will also include valuable information about autism and sexuality, employment, and aging.

At the end of this course, attendees will:

  • Have a clearer understanding of what autism is and how it may present. 
  • Learn the new changes in diagnosis per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 TR (DSM 5 TR). 
  • Learn strategies to help when communicating with a person who presents on the autism spectrum. 
  • Gain knowledge of techniques to better support unique behaviors and routines. 
  • Learn how deficits in executive functioning and theory of the mind affect professional social communication skills.  
  • Learn concrete techniques that can support a person on the autism spectrum in the classroom and on the job. 
  • Learn practical ideas for possible reasonable accommodations. 

Social Work Continuing Education Information 

This course qualifies for 6 SW CE contact hours.

Young Adult Institute, Inc. (YAI) is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0171.

The New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work requires all registrants to attend the entire training to receive the Social Work CE hours. 

If you are not licensed in New York, please check with your state to determine if these credits will be accepted for licensing renewal. 

Continuing Teachers and Leader Education Info

This course qualifies for 6 CTLE contact hours.

Manhattan Star Academy is recognized by the New York State Education Department's Office of Teaching Initiatives as an approved provider of CTLE for Professional Classroom Teachers, School Leaders, and Level III Teaching Assistants, #23724.

The New York State Education Department requires all registrants to attend the entire training to receive the CTLE hours.

Cancellation Policy

If a cancellation is received 14 days prior to a scheduled training, a refund will be provided. Participants who cancel their enrollment less than 14 days but more than 5 days prior to a training will not be refunded but given credit toward a future training. Cancellation less than 5 days prior will result in no refund or credit. 

No-Show Policy

No credit or refund will be provided if a registered participant does not attend a training.

YAI Knowledge reserves the right to cancel a training due to low enrollment numbers. Registrants will be notified at least two business days prior to the scheduled training.
