Strategies for Supporting Families to Address the Social-Sexual Needs of Their Neurodiverse Children

Share

This in-person event held at YAI's Headquarters in Manhattan

4 CE credits available*

Parents are the first and primary social-sexual educators. They often have difficulties "having the talk" with their children around topics such as puberty, privacy, boundaries, sexual advocacy, consent, or body autonomy. This can become a barrier to the social-sexual development of children with disabilities, leaving them more susceptible to becoming victims of abuse.

This workshop will teach attendees practical tips and tools, resources, concrete language, and behavior to help parents learn:

  • That sexuality is not only sex and is a normal aspect of development.

  • Ways to prepare children with disabilities for developmental stages (e.g., puberty, living on their own).

  • How to create a safe and positive environment to communicate about social-sexual issues.

  • How to address issues such as boundaries, privacy, sexual advocacy, self-expression, dating, and consent.
