Brooklyn’s Assistant Supervisor (ASUP) program was created to help with the staffing shortage in the region. The program fosters future leaders who want to grow their careers at YAI. The program that started last year is currently training a new group of people who are interested in moving up to leadership roles. The accelerated three-month course gives participants both the hands-on training and classwork required for the position.

"The Brooklyn ASUP training program is impressively different from any other training program that I have participated in and allows you the opportunity to go back to your home program to witness the lessons in real time, return to training class, and ask relevant questions,” said Sareta Bogle, Assistant Supervisor for Bay Ridge 3. “I believe this is what has added to my confidence as an ASUP. The training team has thought of everything that we will need to be successful, including having an open-door policy. I consistently feel supported in my role and I know that I will continue to grow because of it.”

Participants learn a slew of skills including fire safety, how to do ledgers, petty cash, and scheduling, to name a few. They first learn about the skills during their virtual classes that meet twice a month and then get to practice them when they shadow existing Assistant Supervisors in the region.

The people that come in are looking to get that growth right away and this is our response to people who wanted to move up quickly,” said Elise Marotta, Brooklyn Regional Director of Program and Services. “I am hoping the program helps people move along in their career paths and gives them the support they need when they get the new roles and continue to grow within the agency.”

Vanessa George-Boyea, another alumnus of the program, said the program inspired her to create the MINDSET acronym after seeing the positive changes in her life and in those she supports.

“Since we at the Sheepshead Bay residence have already fostered a culture of growth, I've come to realize that by having such a mindset you can strive to achieve unimaginable measures,” said George-Boyea, Assistant Supervisor at Sheepshead Bay. “Being surrounded by leaders at YAI whose sole mission is to support others is truly an inspiration to me and I'm eager to share that with the rest of the team.”
