Poodle skirts, saddle shoes, and retro flair brought Manhattan Star Academy’s (MSA) joyful sock hop celebration to life. Students from the Upper School stepped back in time on Thursday, May 1, for a 1950s-themed prom celebration held at YAI Headquarters.
“This is our third prom and every year I am amazed at the happiness that radiates from our learners and staff,” said Rosa Ramos, Director of Education at MSA.
More than 60 students and 100 staff came together for an unforgettable afternoon filled with music, dancing, and nonstop fun. From the Twist to the Floss to the classic Hand Jive, students lit up the dance floor, proudly showing off their moves and cheering as the DJ kept the energy high with their favorite tunes.
“Students had an incredible time, and each year this event just keeps getting better,” said Sandra Angilletta, Senior Art Therapist at MSA and one of the event organizers. “It’s a fun and meaningful tradition that celebrates an important teenage milestone while giving students the chance to socialize across classes and come together as one big school community.”
The sensory-friendly event featured a calm-down space for students who needed a break from the stimulation, ensuring everyone could participate comfortably.
"I love the prom because I like to dance and get dressed up," said Maria Tejada, an MSA student. "I feel happy, excited, and beautiful today."
The day ended on a high note with a pizza party for all attendees—capping off an event full of smiles, laughter, and memories.
“Our students always show up and show out,” said Angilletta. “Our parents go above and beyond to make sure their kids are fully immersed in the theme, arriving in amazing costumes, beautiful dresses, and sharp suits.”
