Some Bronx programs got a special visit from Interim CEO Kevin Carey and Chief Quality, Compliance, and Ethics Officer Kristen Elkins who met with regional leadership, toured several residences, and met with self advocates.

“The leadership team in the Bronx sets their standards high, lifts each other up, and holds each other accountable. It truly is a team effort, and you can see that each person is committed to doing their part to help the people we support live their best possible lives,” said Elkins.

Carey and Elkins met with the leadership group at the Zerega Day Habilitation program on March 16 and spent the whole day hearing from staff about their wins and challenges. Some proud moments for the team included getting people in programs back out in the community post-COVID and resuming programs such as the Friday Night Social, the region's weekly gathering for anyone receiving YAI services.

Some challenges that were addressed were the staffing shortage and moving residents to barrier-free homes as they age.

“Kevin and Kristen’s visit meant a lot to us,” said Yvonne Patrick, Bronx Regional Director. “It boosted the morale of the staff and we all walked away feeling very hopeful about what's ahead for YAI.”

Carey and Elkins toured Conde, Bainbridge, Kingsbridge, and Riverdale residences and spoke with Direct Support Professionals and other staff about their goals.

“Throughout my visits, I was struck by the immense air of positivity radiating through the Bronx region,” said Carey. “You could feel the mission of YAI permeating from every staff member and see it in the exceptional, person-centered supports being provided.”

They ended the day talking with self advocates, who gave Carey and Elkins a warm welcome and shared their hopes for the future.
