As Congress considers a new wave of Medicaid cuts this week, YAI is calling on lawmakers and the public to understand what’s at stake for people with disabilities.
Some policymakers have expressed a desire to protect people with disabilities from harm. However, the reality is clear: any reduction in Medicaid funding, no matter how indirect, will impact people with disabilities, their families, and the services they rely on.
“Medicaid is the backbone for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the county. At YAI, we see firsthand how critical these services are,” said Kevin Carey, YAI’s CEO. “Every cut, no matter how it's framed, will make it harder for people to access the care and support they need to live full, inclusive lives. They will lead to fewer services, longer waitlists, and greater hardships for individuals and families. We urge Congress to protect Medicaid and the people who rely on it.”
Among the proposals being debated are cuts that would reduce federal support to states serving undocumented immigrants and limitations on how states raise their own revenue. These changes would strain state budgets and reduce available funding for disability services at a time when the need is growing.
Other proposals, such as new work requirements and more complex eligibility rules, would disproportionately burden people with disabilities—many of whom already face significant challenges navigating bureaucracy and living on very low incomes. Evidence consistently shows these requirements do not achieve their intended outcomes.
YAI stands firmly against any and all cuts to Medicaid. We urge Congress to preserve and strengthen this vital program for the millions of Americans who depend on it.
