The Southern California media site LAIST.COM published a piece that stated, “Disabled immigrants are being abused and neglected inside Adelanto Detention Center.” It was written by Frank Stoltze. It reported how terrible the situation was with its findings on immigrants with disabilities at that Detention Center in California. Here are some of their observations.
Inadequate access to medical treatment, such as life-saving medication and wound care, as well as exposure to widespread respiratory illnesses.
Inadequate access to food and water, including extreme delays in meal distribution, provision of food that results in significant health issues, and a shortage of drinking water.
Inadequate access to clean clothes, with many people remaining in soiled clothing for long periods of time.
Another problem: Minimal opportunities to contact family.
Similar complaints exist on the East Coast also. Here in New York State AM-NY reported “A 31-year-old Peruvian asylum-seeker, Edwin Velasquez Munoz, who has developmental and auditory disabilities, was held in immigration detention for more than a week, without contact with his attorneys or family. Munoz had been arrested by ICE following a routine court hearing in Manhattan. Also, his family and attorneys did not inform the family of his current whereabouts.
Back again on the West Coast, KPBS.ORG reported that a deaf and mute Mongolian man has spent more than 80 days at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego, California. During that time, he has not had an opportunity to see a judge or communicate with anyone who understands Mongolian Sign Language, according to his sister and lawyer.
What is going on here is clear torture! Immigrants of all nationalities with disabilities are not being treated well in detention! There are reports that they are not feed well --- no water, no medical help, no facilities designed for the disabled!
It’s been reported that most of the victims have never even committed a crime! There is one word for all of these abuses:
TERRORISM!!!!!
