Sunset Park was lively in the summer of 2025. On Saturday August 16th, there was a field day at the park hosted by Apex for Youth, a non-profit organization that empowers Asian and immigrant youth living in New York. They help young people improve themselves and stay in tip top shape. Unfortunately, the event starts at 1p.m. so I couldn’t stay long. But I did see some young people playing basketball held by both by both Apex and the Brooklyn Basketball Academy as part of the field day. It was good for them playing basketball because I saw some Latinos and Chinese people, both young and old playing basketball as well doing tai chi and some stretching exercises.

Then, on Saturday, September 20th, the last summer weekend, it was the 10 annual event of Raising Health’s Health Empowerment Celebration. This year also marked their 15th anniversary of their services, supporting residents of Sunset Park by providing good health. There were many different booths from various medical organizations, including those that support mental health and cancer support such as The Brooklyn Cancer Service Program and the Memorial Solan Kettering Cancer Center. Other organizations that support both families and local communities such as the Healthcare choices NY Inc, The Center for Family Life in Sunset Park, and groups that help immigrants develop their goals, like Mixteca and the Worker’s Justice Project.

Special support booths were also there for Alexa Aviles the council member to District 38, and Marcela Mitaynes who is the assembly member of District 51, which covers Bay Ridge Sunset Park and Red Hook. I was surprised that Walgreens participated in this event for the first time. What also surprised me is that this year they held the celebrations in September instead of August. I was disappointed that YAI still didn’t get an opportunity to participate. Hopefully next year there might be another chance for that and maybe the celebration will return to August.
