In both the disability and mainstream populations, Valentine's Day can mean several images and sayings. Besides saying ‘I love you’ and bringing your significant partner boxes of chocolates and flowers, it can also suggest the first step into proposing the subject of long- term marriage. Even though there are marriage penalties for people receiving supplemental security income (SSI), individuals with disabilities can accomplish marriage on their own! It’s something the mainstream world doesn't even think of. 

Even LGBTQ couples can make the sacrifices of legally marrying and having a family. All it takes is commitment, patience, and being responsible for having your SSI and other legal documents certified! 

To my peers who want to get married- only advice to give- take your time to get to know your partner's needs and wants to have a successful relationship for many years to come!
