Hispanic Heritage Month took place from September 15 to October 15, 2025. However, celebrations began a day earlier on September 14, when Brooklyn hosted its Mexican Independence Day parade at Sunset Park. While in Queens there was a short Hispanic Parade at Jackson Heights. The next day the event began with the Mexican Independence Day celebration being take place both at Sunset Park and Times Square, where so many Mexican New Yorkers gathered for the “grito de Independencia” which is Spanish for the “cry for independence” there was music and good performances. On September 16 Times Square had another event which was called in two ways “The Hispanic Heritage month Festival” or the “Latinos in Time Square Festival”. There were so much music and performances from different cultures. The event was 8 hours starting at 1 PM and ending at 9 PM.
Three events took place on Sunday, September 21. The first was a street festival held at Sunset Park, second was another Mexican Independence Day Parade in Midtown Manhattan, and third, there was an African American day parade at Harlem. Finally, during Columbus Day Weekend, there were two parades. The first was the Panamanian Day Parade held on Saturday, October 11, at Franklin Avenue in Brooklyn. The second was the Hispanic Day Parade on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, between 44th and 69th streets, on Sunday, October 12. However, not many people attended or celebrated because of bad weather caused by a nor’easter. Even though I didn’t go to each of those parades, I got to watch them on YouTube.
There were other things that happened during Hispanic Heritage month. Like in Newark New Jersey, Pedro Bismark Chau was the first Nicaraguan to be appointed Bishop in the United States; this was a surprise me and my mother, she is also Nicaraguan. Bad Bunny had a concert in Puerto Rico and sang alongside Marc Anthony, and the two anniversaries for two Hispanic channels in New York, the first was Channel 41 Univision celebrating its 70th Anniversary on air; the Spanish international Network and was founded by Raoul A. Cortez in 1955 in San Antio, Texas. While channel 47 Telemundo celebrates its 60th anniversary, it debuted 10 years later, in 1965. These two channels have brought news and tv shows as well as support and hope to the Latino Communities in New York.
Durning my time in the Hispanic Heritage Month I have been doing sightseeing at Sunset Park, as it is part of my life. There were so many venders on the streets, foods and music and I saw a store that had some Hispanic flags including Nicaragua, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic. Perhaps next year in 2026 there might be some Nicaraguan events in part of the next Hispanic Heritage Month.
