As someone who got a degree in Journalism and New Media Studies, I’ll admit that there haven’t been many chances to use the skills I learned. Also, being that I am very creative, as I love to draw and write, I would like to make my skills better in those areas. Here’s my creative goals for this year:

1. Write my own graphic novel

I have an idea for a graphic novel based on my own experiences with OCD. It focuses on a college-aged girl who is wanting to become a writer, but something’s in the way: a version of a deceased fictional villain she loves and has a crush on is seemingly “connected” to her, spending every waking hour with her. But it’s ruining her mental health, so she must find a way to break the connection and live a normal life. This is a big goal for me, as there are several steps I must take in order for me to help with making a proper graphic novel. I must learn to sharpen my drawing skills, which is also one of my main goals listed later on.

2. Write more movie reviews

I have a portfolio/movie review site that I used to be active on, but unfortunately, I fell out of the habit of constantly updating it. Now, I’ve gotten back in the swing of things, and I want to up the momentum by writing more movie reviews. This will likely get me noticed by potential employers, even though Long Island doesn’t have many positions open for film reviewers. If I work hard as an independent critic, I hope that good things will come my way.

3. Start video reviews/essays in addition to the written ones

A popular thing on YouTube is video essays on a variety of topics, especially with media. There are lots of people who do these reviews that I would like to emulate, but in my own way. I want to make these reviews and essays to show that I am good at doing what I do in all kinds of mediums.

4. Sharpen my drawing skills

There are a lot of things I need to work on when I draw. I usually draw characters from the front, when I need to draw them from the side and back as well, and learn how to properly do that. I also struggle with backgrounds, and haven’t learned to do them properly. I also want to learn how to design original characters, so I got some books to help me with these skills. Hopefully, there is improvement in my art this year.

Even if it seems like I’m a jack of all trades with my goals, these all seem like a great way to embrace my creative side, so I want to devote some time to achieving these goals. It’s a nice way to keep your mood up, and you’ll be happy about your creations, too. If you’re looking to pursue your own goals, take my lead and do them now.
