Family members, self-advocates and YAI staff members recently traveled to Albany to urge state legislators to support funding for services for people with disabilities in Gov. Cuomo’s proposed budget. They joined forces with the New York State Association of Community and Residential Agencies (NYSACRA) and the Interagency Council (IAC), professional organizations representing agencies serving people with disabilities in New York State, during their annual legislative days.

The proposed budget provides funding for The People First (1115) Waiver implementation and pilot programs, community placement, family support services and fire safety.

By sharing first-hand experiences about how services are having a positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities and their families, the message is resonating among members of the state Assembly and Senate.

“I value the services you provide,” Assemblyman Kenneth P. Zebrowski told a group from YAI who participated in NYSACRA’s Legislative Day. “The services you provide are the bread and butter of what government does for people who require support.”

“When you’re talking to folks like me, remind them that in America we don’t leave anyone behind,” state Sen. Roy McDonald, Chairman of the Senate Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Committee, told attendees at NYSACRA’s keynote session. “We’re here for people.”

“Staff help us become more independent,” Jessica, who has lived at YAI’s Williston Park Residence for 20 years, told Assemblyman Edward P. Ra. “If it weren’t for staff, I wouldn’t have all the opportunities I have now.”

Shelley, whose son Dan lives in a YAI residence in Westchester, provided a parent’s perspective in each of her meetings with legislators.

“I’m concerned about all the people on wait lists for services,” she said, adding that she was pleased to see residential opportunities in the budget for individuals returning from out-of-state schools, as well as for community placements. “I feel very blessed that Dan is in a group home, but I worry about all the others and their families.”
