This year, 47-year-old Devin Mullaney has reclaimed his independence and zest for life, thanks to the unwavering care of the Bayshore residence staff. Just a year ago, Mullaney faced serious health challenges: rapid weight loss, frequent seizures, and a loss of independence that left his caregivers deeply concerned.

“He was sleeping all day and barely eating, even though he’s usually a foodie, and struggling with simple activities,” said Nadine Williams, Assistant Supervisor at Bayshore IRA. “It was clear this was not the Devin we knew, and our team knew we had to take action.”

Mullaney was diagnosed with a seizure disorder, cognitive impairment, and a brain injury at age eight. He has lived at the Bayshore IRA for over 20 years, where he enjoys drawing, watching Star Wars and karate movies, and planning weekly dinner trips. He also likes to take charge among his peers, earning him the affectionate title of “second staff on shift” from staff.

Under the care of a new neurologist, with adjustments to his vagus nerve stimulator—a device implanted to help control seizures—revised medication dosages, and consistent monitoring by Williams and staff, Mullaney has steadily regained his health this year.

“We started seeing small changes at first. His appetite came back, he started sleeping normally again, and slowly his independence returned,” Williams said. “It’s amazing to see him planning his week, drawing, and interacting socially again. Devin is back to being Devin.”

Mullaney has gradually returned to his day program, attending part-time before moving back to a full schedule.

“Sometimes he goes months without a seizure, and when he does have one, it’s brief,” Williams said. “This year has been all about progress, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our team.”

“Nadine is my best friend,” said Mullaney. “I love when she takes me to the store to get my movies and to the beach for lunch.”

“I spend a lot of time with Devin,” Williams added. “I attend every appointment with him, track his progress, and advocate for his care. Seeing him return to his normal self has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.”
