Miriam Limsky has been a Yankees fan since 1999 when the team defeated the Atlanta Braves and won their 25th World Series Championship. She was recently invited to join a private Facebook group of all-women Yankees fans and has been able to share her love of baseball and the team with the die-hard community.

Limsky, 77, is a longtime resident of Howard Beach IRA in Queens and heard about the Facebook group from Abby Baker-Lynch, a BIS at the residence. Baker-Lynch, also a fan and part of the Yankee Ladies Facebook group, encouraged Limsky to join.

Excited to be part of the community, Limsky learned how to use Facebook and was ecstatic to be invited to join the online group over the summer. In August, she had a chance to attend a Yankees game for Old-Timers' Day at Yankee Stadium and meet some of the women from the group for the first time. The event honored the 2009 World Series championship team, which won the title 15 years ago.

“I loved it,” Limsky said. “I was just a Yankee lady like everyone else and I belonged to a club outside YAI.”

As part of her birthday celebrations last month, the avid fan attended another game, this time with Baker-Lynch.

“It’s been powerful for Miriam to be seen as someone more than a person with I/DD,” said Baker-Lynch. “It’s about giving her and others like her the options to do things and be seen for just what they like to do and what is important to them.”

Limsky hopes to visit the Yankees for spring training day next year with her group and is currently saving up for the trip.

“This experience has been totally dynamic for Miriam because she sees herself in different light and her anxiety levels have gone down,” Baker-Lynch added. “She feels valued and that’s all that matters.”
