During a recent team meeting at our group home, we were talking about therapeutic relationships. During the discussion, we spoke about how we could be more proactive when working with our residents. One of the areas of focus was around how to best communicate with and teach people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

I decided to revisit an article I had read some years ago that was written by Temple Grandin, PhD. Dr. Grandin is diagnosed with autism and has excellent insight into what it is like to live with autism. The article includes best practices for teaching adults and children with ASD.

I invite those of you that work with individuals on the spectrum to read the article.  After reading it, I spent some time thinking about how we can put some of these ideas into practice within our residence.
