YAI’s psychological testing unit conducts Guardianship Determination Assessments for parents seeking to obtain legal guardianship of their sons or daughters once they turn age 18. As part of the assessment, a YAI licensed psychologist completes the Surrogate Court of New York 17-A Affidavit of Examining Psychologist to indicate whether guardianship is warranted.

YAI's psychological testing unit provides diagnostic evaluations to assist in determining the presence or absence of a developmental disability according to guidelines of the State of New York through the use of well-substantiated measures. Recommendations are made based on direct observation and interaction, interviews, and available records.

YAI's psychosocial evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of a person's history from birth until the present time. The assessment information is gathered from the parent/guardian and previous evaluations. The psychosocial details areas such as family composition, history of disability (if there is one), educational, social, medical and mental health histories, and activities of daily living. The goal of the evaluation is to provide the family/guardian/residence with supportive resources that could aid in the person's growth and achievement of goals.

Psychotherapy is the treatment of mental and emotional disorders through the use of psychological techniques designed to encourage communication of conflicts and insight into problems, with the goal being relief of symptoms, changes in behavior leading to improved social and vocational functioning, and personality growth. Individual, collateral, family, and group therapy are offered.

Speech and Language Pathology (SLP) is a clinical service that offers assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication disorders. The therapist determines the speech, language, cognitive communication and feeding/swallowing needs of patients along with the best ways to treat them.

Residential services are provided in NYC, Long Island, Weschester county, Rockland county and some parts of New Jersey. Options include 24 hour supervised residences and less than 24 hour supportive residences.

The emphasis of day habilitation is participation in the larger community. Most activities occur outside of the day habilitation walls. By participating as volunteers at various organizations, participants have daily opportunities to develop skills; including safe travel using public transportation and community integration.

Project Grown-Up prepares a parent for dealing with issues around their child's physiological development. The group training sessions assist parents in addressing the interpersonal and autonomy issues of relationships and sexuality with their children.

Diagnostic evaluations to determine the presence or absence of autism spectrum disorders through YAI's Autism Center and the Center for Specialty Therapy. The Autism Center also provides private pay neuropsychological evaluations to determine a person's levels of functioning in a variety of areas.

Friday Night Live is a weekly socialization program for young adults aged 18-27 living at home. Activities provide opportunities for socialization, relationship building and the development of social skills and independence. Activities occur on site as well as at various community locations and include dinners out, bowling, movies, etc.

A weekly program held in Rockland County for adults (21+). It offers the opportunity for participants to socialize and bowl in a non-competitive environment. It takes place at a local bowling alley on Sunday mornings from September to May. Bowlers pay a weekly league fee.

YAI ARTS logo

Based in NYC, participants can be from any of the 5 boroughs. On Tuesday evenings we open our studio to people with autism and other developmental or intellectual disabilities looking to advance their creative voice and expand their creative community. We offer mentorship from working artists and opportunities to submit work for exhibition. Artists must provide documentation of developmental or intellectual disability.

Transition program for ages 17-21 on the autism spectrum. Includes Yoga & Mindfulness, Life Skills, and Kitchen Skills.

Vocational assessments may use a variety of standardized tests or situational activities to develop recommendations for training or employment. The process of vocational rehabilitation is to formulate a set of services, within the range of the individual’s capabilities, designed to develop the skills and ability to achieve a successful employment goal.

The YAI Network has been awarded a grant from the Department of Transportation to provide a comprehensive Travel Training program to agencies across New York City.  This program has four components: 

Psychiatrists provide diagnostic and/or medication management services. EFMNY does not offer emergency psychiatric services. Person does not need to have Medicaid to receive this service.

WOW is an innovative arts program that provides opportunities for adults aged 18 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities to advance their creative voice and become working artists.

Program currently runs Monday to Thursday 10 AM - 3 PM

 

Posture care is an innovative approach that improves physical and mental well-being in people with disabilities through symmetrical body alignment. Posture care is facilitated by Physical Therapists and is designed to integrate into other interventions, including rehabilitation services.  

Based on a UK model, posture care is gaining popularity in the United States. The technique uses a gentle, non-invasive approach to improve the distribution of force on joints, ligaments, and muscles.  

YAI’s Center for Innovation and Engagement understands how technology can help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities better participate in their community. People of all ages use mobile devices to communicate, listen to music, complete courses, play games, travel, and pay bills. With training, those who receive support from YAI can develop the independence to do so as well.  

The Center for Innovation and Engagement is focused on empowering people in four key areas: 

The emphasis of this part time day habilitation is participation in the larger community and preparing for employment. By participating as volunteers at various organizations, participants have opportunities to develop work skills. Participants must be diagnosed with Epilepsy or Seizure Disorder and be able to travel independently.
